When Annie Lennox’s breathtakingly gorgeous rendition of Fragile surprises Sting at the Polar Music Awards, Sting is visibly shaken.

The Polar Music Prize and Annie Lennox’s Tribute to Sting

The Polar Music Prize, one of the world’s most prestigious music awards, was established by Abba’s manager and lyricist, Stig “Stikkan” Anderson, following the sale of his companies to Polygram in 1989. The prize, funded by Anderson’s MSEK 42 (millions of Swedish krona), is awarded annually by an independent board, which includes members of Anderson’s family and international figures. Recipients of this honor, presented by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, range from classical composers to contemporary artists, including Metallica, Peter Gabriel, and Angélique Kidjo.

In 2017, Sting was honored with the Polar Music Prize. During the celebration, a surprise performance by Annie Lennox left a lasting impression. Lennox’s rendition of Sting’s “Fragile,” a song from his 1987 album “Nothing Like the Sun,” was emotionally powerful. The song, inspired by the tragic death of American engineer Ben Linder in Nicaragua, was transformed by Lennox’s interpretation into a haunting and poignant tribute.

Sting’s appreciation for Lennox’s performance was evident, and viewers were moved by the mutual respect between the artists. Comments on the performance highlight Lennox’s talent and the profound impact of her rendition on the audience.
