Tina Turner had a successful 1984. Tina Turner, best known as the lead singer of the band Ike and Tina, petitioned for a divorce from Ike in July 1976. Later on, she steadily expanded her solo career with the support of longtime friends like the Rolling Stones, for whom she provided opening vocals for their 1981 US tour. On a Chuck Berry TV special in 1982, she made an appearance as a special guest. Her 1983 November single, “Let’s Stay Together,” a cover by Al Green, was an unexpected international smash.

Capitol Records gave the go-ahead for Tina Turner to release a new album after the Al Green track became a hit. May 1984 saw the release of Private Dancer, which had been recorded in just two weeks. While peaking at #3 on the Billboard 200, the album reached #2 in the UK. Her lone US Billboard 100 #1 was the song “What’s Love Got To Do With It” by Turner. Hits like “Private Dancer” and “Be Better Be Good to Me” followed. Tonight, a duet with David Bowie on the Iggy Pop song, was released as a single in November 1984. Consider this:

Strangely enough, the single “Tonight” peaked at number 53 on the UK charts and the Billboard Hot 100. This particular rendition is taken from Tina Live in Europe, a CD/DVD combo. The live performances, which took place from 1985 to 1987, were released in 1988. Turner won a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance in 1989 for the CD. “She produced a great deal of music, but this, featuring the legendary David Bowie, is among my favorites,” remarks Kay Hinton on YouTube. Chris Montez’s 1962 smash “Let’s Dance” was written and performed by Jim Lee. A lot of people know the David Bowie tune. Both of these films feature performances by Turner’s Private Dancer tour, which took place at the NEC in Birmingham, UK, on the same night in 1985.

According to Wikipedia, she was known for her “swagger, sensuality, powerful gravelly vocals and unstoppable energy,” as well as her famed legs, her history with ex-husband Ike Turner, and other well-publicized details. David Bowie and Tina Turner, rest in peace.
